How to get brightness working on a samsung n145 netbook
Hay guys I just wanted to write up a more simple guide since other guides, some guides either missing info or not noob friendly to getting the brightness to work and to stop the FN keys from freezing on a Samsung net book N145/N145P/N150..basically most of the N series,
Always double check what model your running I'm running a Samsung n145 plus which is a N145P or in some countries a N250P. I'm using ultimate 3.0 lite but this should work for most Linux oses from ultimate to jolicloud...debian thou is a different kettle of fish
*Once done the brightness control wont always work Iv had to reboot a few times to get it working. Ill keep looking into this
*Seems to work better with charger plugged in but will work with out it plugged in :/
so here we go
step 1
Make sure every thing is upto date, if unsure run your update manager
Step 2
Open up your terminal and put each line in.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:voria/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install samsung-backlight
sudo apt-get install nvidia-bl-dkms
step 3
Again in terminal
sudo gedit /etc/modules
The module gedit should open and you will see lp, after lp put in nvidia_bl so It should look like
lp nvidia_bl than save and exit
Step 4
In terminal
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
a grub edit will open you will see 2 lines the first one being
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
change this to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_osi=Linux acpi_brightness=vendor splash"
The next line should say
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
change this to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_sleep=nonvs"
Than save and exit
sudo reboot
Step 5 (This bit stops the FN keys from freezing)
Open up the terminal and type
sudo apt-get install samsung-tools
Step 6
Again in terminal
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/95-keyboard-force-release.rules
and you should see this line
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*"
Now make the line look like this
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*",ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}=="N145P|N250P", RUN+="keyboard-force-release.sh $devpath samsung-other"
*replace the N145P|N250P If it differs to mine
Save than quit
Step6
with terminal open type
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/95-keymap.rules
scroll down till you see
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*" once your there
ENV{DMI_VENDOR}=="[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*",ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}=="N145P|N250P", RUN+="keyboard-force-release.sh $devpath samsung-other"
*Again change the N145P|N250P if it differs to mine
save and quit
Step 7
Since the terminal is open type
sudo reboot
Step 8
Check your update manager you might have a few new updates (I did)
enjoy your net book
There is other steps found on other sites Iv tried them and they didn't work for me but this guide
I did step by step and wrote it down as I did it and it works for me..I hope this guide helps others and maybe 1 day this fix will be sorted in future releases of your fav distro.
Thanks to every one over at https://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/index.php who helped me fix this issue
